Predator is an adrenaline and testosterone filled action film that launched the career of one of the best sci-fi villains to ever hit the big screen. The film is packed with cheesy one liners, witty dialogue, and awesome characters that are fascinating to watch.
Predator stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch, the leader of an elite group of soldiers sent to Central America to rescue some U.S. hostages. Things go awry for the soldiers when they discover they’re being hunted by an extraterrestrial being (that we all know as “the Predator”) with very advanced technology. The film very quickly becomes a game of cat and mouse, with our protagonists struggling to stay alive.
The design of the Predator is fantastic too. There are plenty of good science fiction films where the aliens look cheap made or cheesy, however Predator is not one of those movies. The costume looks very real and unique, and it has a very intimidating look and stature.
There is this really awesome scene where the Predator takes off his mask and you see all the details of his face. The Predator’s mouth and face can articulate expression very well, which is extremely impressive to me. I believe the Predator itself is an iconic science fiction character on the same level as something like the Xenomorph from Alien.
One of the most memorable parts of the film (other than the Predator itself) is all the one liners. Only after a few viewings I can remember verbatim many of the great lines of dialogue in Predator such as, “I don’t have time to bleed”and “If it bleeds, we can kill it”. And then there is of course the most famous line in the film, “Get to the chopper”, which is always a great line to hear.
The setting of the Central American jungles is a clever location to have the film, especially since the Predator is able to cloak itself and become invisible. The Predator always seems one step ahead of Arnold and his gang of manly men, which really adds to the intensity of the film. Even when the Predator isn’t on screen you can feel his looming presence, making the tone very cautious and eerie.
The final third of the film, which involves a game of cat and mouse between Schwarzenegger and the Predator, is edge of your seat awesome. This particular part of Predator is why I feel it sets itself apart from other cheesy 80’s films. It’s full of explosions and the usual mix of action tropes, but goes even further than most with the intense imagery. Every second of Arnold and Predator battling it out is exceptionally filmed and is sure to leave the audience well entertained and satisfied.
Predator is often cited as one of the best action films of all time, and rightfully so. If you haven’t gotten the chance to see the macho 80’s classic Predator, I’d highly recommend watching it. It has the perfect mix of cheesy and legitimately good scenes and dialogue. The Predator is wicked sweet and Arnold gives in my opinion one of his best performances ever. Predator is one for the ages that will be relevant for a long time to come.
The Verdict: A
